What are different types of diabetes?

Diabetes is a condition where the body does not produce insulin or cannot effectively use it. There are 3 main types of diabetes.

Diabetes is a chronic condition that occurs either when the pancreas (an endocrine gland in our body) does not produce adequate insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. Insulin is a hormone that is needed to decrease blood sugar levels

There are 3 main types of diabetes:

1- type I diabetes:

In this type of diabetes, our body cannot produce enough insulin, resulting in high blood sugar. The main reason for the reduction in insulin secretion is the destruction of the pancreas by our immune system and is thought to be caused by genes and environmental factors. This condition usually happens at earlier ages in comparison to other types of diabetes. To keep blood sugar in the normal range, these patients need daily shots of insulin. So, this type of diabetes is sometimes referred to as insulin-dependent diabetes.

2- type II diabetes:

Type II diabetes, previously known as non-insulin-dependent diabetes, results from the body’s insensitivity to insulin. In the early stages of this condition, the pancreas produces normal or even higher than normal amounts of insulin. But the body does not respond appropriately, there for same as type I, which results in high blood sugar. It is thought that this type of diabetes (which is also the most common type) is mainly the result of excess body weight and physical inactivity.

3- Gestational diabetes:

In this type of diabetes, high blood sugar happens during pregnancy which is caused by Insulin-blocking hormones produced by the placenta cause this type of diabetes. Blood sugar usually reduces to a normal level soon after delivery. However, there is a higher risk of suffering from type 2 diabetes in the future if you have had gestational diabetes.

What are the symptoms of diabetes?

There are several signs and symptoms resulting from high blood sugar in these patients. Here are 4 early signs of diabetes:

  1. Frequent urination

Due to high blood sugar, kidneys expel the extra blood sugar in the urine, causing them to urinate more frequently. One of the early signs of diabetes is frequent urination that may wake you up during sleep.

  1. Increased thirst

Because of frequent urination, valuable fluids will be more water loss, and to have normal water in our blood, we feel thirstier.

3- Increased hunger

In diabetic patients, the body cannot use sugar, the main source of energy, properly, so patients have increased feelings of hunger.

  1. Unexplained weight loss

Because of the body’s inability to use its largest source of energy, it starts burning fat and muscle, causing weight loss.
